Heraclea Pontica, Bithynia
SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS
(193 - 211 CE)
Septimius Obv: AVT [KΛ CEΠ] CEVHPOC Π
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: HPAKΛHAC EN ΠONTΩ
Hercules advancing right, nude except for lionskin tied around neck and wrapped around left arm, holding rake to clean the Augean Stables.
(According to Hans Voegtli, Bilder der Heldenepen, Basel 1977, pp. 44-45, the cleansing of the Augean stables is the least commonly depicted of the Twelve Labors of Hercules, both on ancient coins and in ancient art generally. Voegtli knew depictions of this myth on the coins of only three cities, Alexandria in Egypt, Heraclea in Bithynia, and Perinthus in Thrace)
